In answer...

1) Let me point you towards a book "Questions of Life" by the originator of the 'Alpha course', Nicky Gumble. In chapter 2 Nicky - a trained barrister - asks the question at  the top of this page and puts forward convincing evidence that the New Testament has been accurately passed down to us.
We are left in no doubt that Jesus existed. The question is posed as to whether Jesus was a good person, a lunatic, or what he said that he was - the Son of God.
As a correspondant, Ed Goulian Jr., pointed out - the first is impossible. Jesus couldn't have been a good person and not the Son of God! He claimed to be the Son of God and good people of sound mind don't make those kind of claims unless they are. So you're left with two choices... Madman or Son of God.
Read the book and then you will need to give your own answer.
2) With grateful thanks to a fellow Christian and friend, Sam Okorocha, I include on this page the text of an evening message that he delivered to the fellowship at Aintree.

THE UNIQUE CHRIST & THE UNIVERSAL GOSPEL Hebrews 1:1-9

The Unique Christ. What an adequate way to describe whom Jesus is, who Jesus was
and still is in all of history. The only incarnation of God in human flesh who died on the cross.
He did what no one else could do what no one else has done and what no one else will ever do.
He bore our sins He rose again for our justification. There was no one else like Him in His time
or in our time. He was and is unique. He is without rival, without equal and without comparison.
Christ is not just among possibilities, He is not just among many teachers, not just among many
friends and His gospel is not just one among many gospels. There's no salvation in any other
and there is no other name given among men under heaven whereby we can be saved (Acts 4:12).

There's no other name, no other friends, no other gospels, no other way of salvation apart from the
salvation that God wrought through His son Jesus Christ. What then does the bible make us to
understand? The bible makes us to understand, that Jesus Christ is unique in every way and that
His gospel is universal. Universal means that the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is needed by all.
The question is what does the word unique mean? The word unique simply means - being the only
one of its kind, having no like or equal.

The Uniqueness Of Christ - Matthew 16:13-18

Jesus Christ himself, I believe would have us know who He really is. We can see in the scriptures
that He asked His disciples "who do men say I am?" and they said, "some say John the Baptist,
some Elijah and others Jeremiah or one of the Prophets". He asked them specifically who do you
say I am? Jesus Christ wanted to know who and what they thought Him to be before He revealed
himself to them. Some in our world think or say that Jesus is a good man, a moral man. Yes he is,
but more than that because Jesus Christ is unique in heaven and unique on earth. He is unique in
time; and unique in eternity. Jesus Christ is unique to the church and unique to the world.
Jesus Christ is unique:

  • Unique as Saviour
  • Unique as the Judge
  • Unique as the Son of Man and at the same time the Son of God
  • Unique in Incarnation
  • Unique in Resurrection
  • Unique in Holiness
  • Unique in Power
  • Unique in Humility (Philippians 2: 5-8)
  • Unique in Authority
  • Unique in Suffering
  • Unique in Triumph
  • Unique in Words (John 7: 45-46)
  • Unique in Work (Mark 7: 37)
  • Unique as Servant of Jehovah and at the same time King that reigns over the whole universe
  • Unique in Prophesy
  • Unique in the whole Bible (John 5: 39)
